Julie Selwyn’s research – Beyond the Adoption Order (Wales): Discord and disruption in adoptive families

Chief Executive of St David’s Children Society, Gerry Cooney responding to Dr Selwyn’s research:

The publication of Julie Selwyn’s report on the quality of adoption services in Wales raises serious questions. Responding to her research, Gerry Cooney CEO of St David’s Children Society said:

“This is influential and commanding research. Dr Selwyn finds that while our adoption system has its strengths, inherent weaknesses remain. Her core message is that a considerable number of children placed for adoption continue to be deeply affected by their early life experiences. The report emphasises just how crucial adoption support is to ensure each individual child’s life-chances and their continued emotional development. We are clear – to place children with adoptive families without the ongoing support that meets these deepest needs, is an injustice for our most vulnerable children and the families who parent them.”

Dr Selwyn’s researcher-iterates the urgent need for change. “We are confident that the National Adoption Service in Wales can reform structures and achieve the innovations needed.”

“St. David’s is a full partner in the new service and continues to provide the best possible support required by each child at every step of the adoption process. The results and outcomes for children and families is evidenced in placement stability, redressing such serious disadvantage.”

“Far too many children continue to wait for adoptive placements. It is vital that all families considering adoption feel confident that they will receive the support they need to grow as a family. St. David’s guarantees this support, for as long as it takes. Children deserve nothing less.”
